Exploring the warped side of the Universe: The search for
gravitational waves

Speaker: Nergis Mavalvala (MIT,USA)

Date/Time: April 30, 2014 Wednesday at 13:40

Place: Sabancı University, SUNUM seminar room

Abstract: Gravitational waves pervade the Universe, carrying valuable information about Black Holes, neutron stars, supernovae, and even the very first moments after the Big Bang. Predicted by Einstein nearly 100 years ago, and radiated during some of the most violent events in the Universe, direct detection of gravitational waves has been elusive. I will describe progress to date and future prospects for the worldwide efforts to directly detect gravitational waves using precision laser interferometry.
