PHYS Seminar: How Do Radio Pulsars Spin-Down?

LISTEN

Abstract:

Radio pulsars are rapidly spinning neutron stars with strong magnetic dipole fields. They slow-down by converting their rotational kinetic energy into radiation.

Although it is commonly accepted that they release magnetic dipole radiation there is wealth ofevidence for the existence of contributing processes.

I will discuss some of these processes:(i) the growth of magnetic fields, (2) increasing inclination angle between rotation and magnetic axis and (3) the presence of debris disks which couple to their magnetospheres.
