ABSTRACT

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is a state-of-the-art particle physics detector designed to operate as an external module on the International Space Station. It will use the unique environment of space to study the universe and its origin by searching for antimatter, dark matter while performing precision measurements of cosmic rays composition and flux.

The AMS02 detector is collecting data since May 2011. During the first year of data taking more than 65 million event have been registered. This unprecedented large amount of data is being analyzed to provide a complete, high statistics, accurate and long-term measurement of the composition and of the spectral of the Cosmic Rays.

In a first part of presentation the published results and the on-going analyses will be briefly reviewed. In a second part, an introduction to innovative radiation detector projects ongoing in Turkey which are basing on cutting-edge technologies developed for AMS02 and CMS-Cern experiments.  The applications of  these projects cover wide range of fields from space to health, ambient and to homeland security.

BIOGRAPHY

PhD from University of Perugia & INFN (National Institute for Nuclear Physics) of Italy, post-doc at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) of Stanford University, at present, senior research scientist at INFN Perugia Section. In experimental high energy physics he has worked in experiments at accelerators as SLD at SLAC, and L3-LEP at Cern, at underground laboratories (LVD at Gran Sasso Labs of INFN) and since last almost 20 years is working on AMS-01/02 experiments.  In AMS he has been group leader of INFN Perugia, team leader of tracker system during experiment integration at ETH-Zurich, KSC-Florida and of operations at JSC-Houston. He is founder of two spin-off companies MAPRAD (in Italy), IRADETS (Teknopark Istanbul) with core business of radiation hardness studies and of radiation detectors r&d. He has been PI of activity founded by ESA in the framework of “cosmic vision”, in view of missions to mars,  to study effectiveness of new radiation shielding materials and fragmentation modeling. A new concept radiation detector developed in cooperation with TAEK has been selected as winner of the "Innovators of Italy in 2011/2012" of Agency for the Promotion of Technologies for  Innovations of Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Italy.  He is member of international scientific advisory committee of TAC (Turkish Accelerator Center) project.

At present he is active in high energy and astroparticle physics, spaceweather & radiation effects studies and  in development of new concept radiation detectors
