Title: OLED-on-Silicon for microdisplays and optoelectronic sensors:Technology, Devices, and Application
Speaker: Uwe Vogel (Fraunhofer FEP)

Place: Sabancı University, FENS G029

Abstract: Smart Glasses have recently gained lots of market attention. Micro-displays - the core display component of Smart Glasses - based
on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) on Silicon CMOS substrates (OLED-on-Silicon) achieve high optical performance with excellent contrast ratio and large dynamic range at low power consumption. The direct light emission from the OLED enables small-footprint and lightweight devices without additional backlight, making them suitable for mobile near-to-eye (NTE) applications such as electronic viewfinders, or head-mounted displays (HMD/Smart Glasses).

In state-of-the-art applications the micro-display typically acts as a purely unidirectional output device. With the integration of an
additional image sensor, the functionality of the micro-display can be extended towards a bidirectional optical input/output device. The
major aim is the implementation of eye-tracking capabilities in see-through HMD applications to achieve gaze-based human-display interaction.
Beyond microdisplays for NTE the same OLED-on-Silicon process platform has been applied in various optical sensor applications, either
imaging (e.g., surface metrology) or non-imaging, such as flowmetry, color sensing, lab-on-chip. The seminar will report on technology, devices and application examples.

Biography: Dr. Uwe Vogel is the Deputy Director and the Division Director of Microdisplays and Sensor Technology at Fraunhofer FEP.
After working in medical research at Dresden University Hospital for some years he had started his current career as an Analog IC designer
at Fraunhofer for Photonic Microsystems (IPMS) in Dresden/Germany in 1998. Since 2000 he used to manage the Analog/Mixed‐Signal IC design group, and later he was involved in development of OLED-on‐Silicon activities mainly focusing on the design of process technology (Silicon‐OLED integration), devices and applications, backplanes, OLED displays (microdisplay and 3D displays), OLED display driver IC, high‐speed data transmission and MEMS‐CMOS integration. In 2010 he was appointed a head of the newly formed business unit "OLED microdisplays and sensors", which has continued to evolve inside Fraunhofer Institution for Organics, Materials and Electronic Devices Dresden (COMEDD) and since July 1st 2014 inside Fraunhofer FEP. Since then, Uwe Vogel continued activities in the field of microdisplays and has been a coordinator of several collaborative projects in this area at European and national levels. His research interests are focusing on the design of OLED-on-Silicon
devices and applications (e.g., in data glasses or/and optoelectronic sensors), backplanes, OLED displays (microdisplay, near-to-eye display/augmented-reality, 3D displays), display driver IC, high-speed data transmission, MEMS-CMOS integration as well as biomedical applications.
Uwe Vogel became skilled worker in semiconductor microelectronics, holds a diploma in Information Technology and Electrical Engineering
from the Technical University of Chemnitz, and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the Technical University of Dresden.
