Abstract: Mechanical devices at the nanoscale provide unprecedented sensing performance for mass, force and chemical sensing applications. I will first review our work in weighing single molecules with nano-electromechanical systems (NEMS). Unlike conventional techniques for mass spectrometry, NEMS systems directly probe the inertial mass of  molecules, rather than mass-to-charge ratios. For this reason, NEMS sensors are more suitable for large biomolecules where excessive charging may cause fragmentation. I will describe experiments whereby neutral molecule mass spectrometry is first accomplished. Apart from molecular mass sensing, NEMS devices are shown to be capable of extracting spatial properties of analytes and provide a new imaging modality based on the inertial density distribution of an analyte. I will review our work for Inertial Imaging techniques whereby spatial properties are converted into an image of an analyte. I will conclude by briefly reviewing new project in our NEMS research group such as electronic nose and nanomechanical computation.
