Abstract: In nature, ability to change skin color is a survivalmechanism used for camouflage and signaling. In  reptiles, forexample, various mechanisms have evolved to tune the scattering andabsorption of light.  Similarly, in modern technology, activecamouflage is an emerging field of research aiming to developsurfaces with reconfigurable optical properties. These “smart”surfaces are essential part of active camouflage systems such as;active radar shield to camouflage objects from radar signals orflexible display devices used for optical cloaking. In this talk, Iwill present our research on graphene based smart surfaces withreconfigurable optical properties. Instead of tuning the bulk materialproperties, our approach relies on controlling electromagnetic wavesby tuning the density of free carriers on graphene via electrostaticdoping. I will present some applications of the developed graphenebased smart surfaces covering a broad spectrum from the visible tomicrowave.

Biography: Coşkun Kocabaş received the BS degree in physics from METU,Ankara, Turkey, in 2001. He took his PhD from University of Illinoisat Urbana-Champaign, IL, USA, in 2007. After taking his PhD, he workedas a postdoc in Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology  atHarvard University from 2007 to 2009.  In 2009, he joined BilkentUniversity Department of Physics as faculty member. His research groupis working on synthesis of new quantum materials and their integrationin to electronic and photonic devices. He is particularly interestedin graphene for tunable light-matter interaction in broad spectrumfrom visible to microwave frequencies.
